Dominican Rite Mass in DC: Photo Link

As readers know, a Dominican Rite Missa Cantata was celebrated in the Dominican House of Studies in Washington DC on September 27, 2012.  The celebrant was Fr. Pius Pietrzyk, O.P., and the event was very well attended.

The brothers have now put up a photo-streams at this link.

Looking at the pictures, would I be correct in saying that, compared to the population of the House of Studies community, relatively few friars were in attendance?

The problem was that there was a long-scheduled meeting of many senior members of the House. A number of the brothers also have outside ministries or classes at CUA. It is a very busy Priory, and sometimes events simply overlap. Given everything else that was happening in the Priory, there was a very good turnout.

Nice to hear it. I can't see how it could be anything other than a big plus for the Order to reclaim its own rite along with the Novus Ordo.

Just as a point of information, a Solemn O.P. Mass was celebrated in Rome at Santissima Trinità dei Pellegrini on October 7 with yours truly as celebrant. (In the spring I celebrated a Missa canata there as well for St Catherine.) So, we can add at least one Central province friar to the list of Dominicans who have publicly celebrated our Mass in the forma antiquior!

Dear Fr. Holtz,

Thanks for the information. Do you have photos? I would be glad to post them.

I might also note that this Solemn Mass is (to my knowledge) the FIRST Solemn Mass celebrated since 1969 by an American Dominican who is not a member of the Western Province, where he have always had them regularly.

I would also mention that during the recent meeting of Dominican students of the American and Canadian provinces, I chatted with the two Central province students. I was told "Fr. Dominic [Holtz] was the best teacher I had at St. Louis; we really miss him." High praise I think.

Most of the folks there who might have normally taken pictures were assisting as ministers, so I'm not sure whether or not any pictures were taken. If not, I know they want to host us again at Ssma Trinità, so we'll make sure to have someone "camera ready"!

Dear Fr. Dominic,

Very good. I assume you know that the Bonniwell Ceremonial and the Dominican Altar Boy's Manual have both been reprinted by Dominican Liturgy Publications. I am sure copies of the first will be useful to your deacon and subdeacon, and that copies of the second will be useful for your four servers. Order copies at:
