Calendar for Lesser Know Dominican Blesseds

A question from a reader in Poland concerning the celebration of the "lesser" Dominican blesseds who were moved from the General Calendar of the Order to the local calendars of their provinces suggested this post.

Since the Dominican Calendar available for download on the left sidebar had nothing on these blesseds, I have added an addendum to that calendar listing both the blesseds approved for use in the provinces in 1962 along with the Dominicans beatified Dominicans from 1962 to the present (marked with *).

Although these saints would normally be celebrated as "memorials" (an extra collect) only in their own provinces, nothing prohibits celebration of them in other provinces.  And, for cause, they might also be celebrated as feasts of the Third Class, at least in their own provinces.  I might also add that if one of these blesseds has a tomb or shrine in one of our priories or churches, then in that place the blessed is celebrated as a feast of the Second Class.  This is parallel to Dominican saints with feasts of the third (or second) class: in the place of the shrine or tomb, they rank as first class.

Father Augustine,

Being a sinner, I find consolation and encouragement in Saints who, from initially leading devout lives, lapsed into sin, only to repent and reform their lives, which is why, among others, I have a devotion to Blessed Bonaventure Tolomei. I looked on the calendar of Blesseds which you kindly provide, but cannot see him listed - have his Dominican brethren ceased to honour him?

In Christ

Dear JB,

This is interesting. Bl. Bonaventure Tolomei is not only missing from the "lesser blesseds" of the 1962 calandar, he is lacking in the pre-1962 calendar, AND the pre-Pius X reform calendar in the 1909 Dominican Breviary, which has all the medieval saints that were celebrated by the Order officially. So he was never dropped because he was never on the calendar. I might add that he does not appear in either the Dominican Martyrology or the Roman (pre- or post-Vatican II).

So it is not surprising that I am unable to find any reference to either a beatification or an official approval of a local cult. I suspect them that he is, like Bl. Carino of Forli (the man who murdered St. Peter Martyr), an unapproved local cult. That does not mean that he cannot be celebrated privately, like Carino.

If you like repentant saints, I would also recommend Bl. Bartolo Longo, on Oct. 6. He became a Satanist and then repented, becoming a member of the 3d Order.

Thank you for the excellent calendar.
I am looking for two people:

Feb. 2: Bl. Pietro (1320-1365)

And maybe Feb. 24 belongs to
Bl. Costanzo (1481)

Grazie tante.

Dear Theodore (I assume),

For Anna of the Angels Monteagudo (Jan. 10), Peter of Ruffia (Nov. 7), and Bl. Constantius of Fabriano (Feb. 25), check the supplement at the end of the calendar. It lists the optional minor blesseds for use in the local provinces.

If you don't have the ordinary calender with this supplement, here is the link:
